born and raised into a garage cottage industry in PA where my grandmother was making draperies and taught me this trade. this art work is an homage to her, bringing insight to empowering the humble stitch through creating powerful images of women. i am a visionary, self-taught outsider artist working within this visual language of salvage art for about 35 years.
Mixed Media with use of encaustics, organic prints, textile inks, ink-jet prints, beeswax, hand stitchery in dyed cotton thread & free-motion stitchery on my assemblages of over-dyed vintage linens. my art in the vernacular form of quilt is a transcendent Stitchery for mending the fragmented human condition.
the latest series of work called 'Sutras', in Sanskrit, this literally means 'thread'. Tattooing cloth with thread, marking rites of passage both ceremonial and mundane, as a document of sacred time.
These works are prayer, as any sound, movement or task drawn out of the body. Each stitch a vibration in the infinite cosmic sound current.
i am also a student of Yogic practices, lived 3 years on an ashram in NY state and studying with a Vedic fire healer in India. for the past 2 years i have been enrolled in Seminary studying Interfaith Ministry and will be ordained in June 2008.
