How this painting was born:
When I finished painting her, I found that she resembled Madame Medusa, or at least a young-looking version of her, from the movie “The Rescuers.”
In “The Rescuers,” Madame Medusa is an evil woman whose obsession with finding the lost diamond, The Devil’s Eye, causes her to lose everything she ever had.
Looking at this young Madame Medusa, I wondered what she might have been like as a young woman. Nobody becomes evil overnight. What was her story that led to her self-destructive life?
I imagine that she was lacking something crucial in her life and facing many disappointments, causing her to grow bitter and forcing her to search for something that would make her important, something that would give meaning to her life, which led her to an obsession that was her ultimate downfall.
