How this painting was born:
I almost never draw or paint portraits of real people, but my portrait of Buffy Sainte Marie is a mentionable exception.
When I was very little, all the Native American people I ever saw were bad people on TV who mindlessly killed people with arrows. Buffy changed that for me.
She appeared on Sesame Street for five years and taught me that people are people, regardless of how TV portrays them.
I became worried during one episode where she introduced her music bow. I thought that the pretty “Indian” lady was going to use her bow to shoot arrows at the Sesame Street characters. Instead, she put the end of it in her mouth and made music out of it, easing my fears.
Recently, All Saints Day caused me to reflect on people who are canonized saints, and then people who are seen as saints, even though they are not canonized.
My mind rolled over the name Buffy SAINTe Marie. The “saint” in her name made sense to me, because she has reached over the chasm of cultures and taught the valuable lesson that people are people to thousands of children across the country.
The title of the portrait, “Goodnight,” is named after one of my favorite songs from Buffy.
