Biography
Hi, my name is Patrick Flood, I currently reside in the small town of Yucaipa, California, nestled in the foothills below Big Bear.
I was born in Phoenix Arizona and lived in Phoenix, Scottsdale and Tucson until I was twelve years old. I spent my teenage years growing up in a town called Saugus California. Better known today as Valencia Ca.
I spent most of my youth hiking around in wide open spaces, most of it desert.
When I reached the age of twenty I entered the U.S. Coast Guard. Most of my 7 year tour was in Hawaii. My time in the Coast Guard was spent working, body surfing and painting. After my military tour was over I went on and off to college taking courses in graphic design, drawing, advanced drawing paintiing and business. I devoted much of my time to painting and developed my skills with an airbrush. I did a lot of three dimensional work with foam core and masonite. My pieces were very modern, sureal and abstract.
The places I lived and worked in, inspired me and I tried photography back then, but I was not able to control the outcome of the process and became disinterested.
In my thirties I began working with the computer and learned as much as I could about CGI and 3d graphics this eventualy lead me to Adobe Photoshop.
I have been using Photoshop since version 2 and have taken many courses provided by Adobe. I highly recomend them for anybody interested in persuing a photography career.
At the same time Adobe was improving so was digital photography. Digital cameras were getting better. With the advent of the first digital SLR cameras I jumped back into photography. The learning curve was the same for most of us, new and old pro alike. The digital darkroom gave me new control over the process.
Now with the lattitude that digital has provided me I can show the world how I view it.
The images I have on my website are a compilation of the last eight years of digital photography. I am now exclusively using a Cannon 1ds mark II. I have found that I can make much larger images with the 16 mega pixels.
In my images I try capture the most outrageous light I can. This means getting up long before first light and staying out long after the last tourist has left. I have learned that the most beautiful colors are there for quite awhile before sunrise and after sunset. I have also learned that photography can be done pretty much any time of the day. I like to do infrared photography in the middle of the day and night photography is great when doing long exposures.
Many of the places I go to capture images are changing very rapidly. I feel that somtimes the image I have just captured is the last time it will be that way. I practice the principal leave nothing behind and only take the image with me.
I hear many people explain that pictures can't do a place justice. I truly feel that my images do..
I am currently an meber of the Redlands art assoc.and the Redlands Camera Club.I have participated in numourous juried shows. The picture "poppies and bones" won best of show and the picture "black white and red all over" took first place. The picture of "bell rock" sedona won jurors selection at the San Bernardio Museum anual mini show. Primary works have been in acylics, airbrush, and photography. Currently working with 35mm digital SLR. I can be e-mailed at pbfsws@aol.com. for more ways to buy images please see yessy.com/pbfswsOpens in new window
