Jessica Hsu is a female artist full of creative energy. She takes inspiration from philosophy, music, and the Nature. Dancing, flower arrangements, painting are the channels to release her ecstasy of art. Her works reveal the liveliness and grandeur of her inner spirit world. In her five decades of living and three decades of innovation, she obtained a deep understanding of the many opposite but complementary images of the universe such as movements, tranquility, rising, falling, live, death, emptiness, fullness, etc. She uses her paint brushes to bring out her positive, bright thought energy to bridge the gap between her audience and the universe.
Henri Bergson,a French aesthete once said, "Reality is not constant but is constantly changing. The activities of artists are essential because they can remove the many mirages between us and the reality." The style of Ms. Hsu, abstract of the learned person, based on abstract presentation of the image, with the intuitive action of the subconscious, added to the connection of her body and soul, and came out as the release of her imagination. The paintings are structured with bold strokes of calligraphy . She freely applys juicy colors to create the ethereal mood. Sometimes uses dripping and spraying colors as Jackson Pollack's Automatism, or uses the simple color blocks as Mark RothKo's Minimalism; with partial collages of paper, gold foils, dry leaves, etc. to create the complex texture. For Jessica, the process of abstract painting begins with bold instinct ,ends with refined simplicity . The results are similar to a magnificent symphonic poem. Her effort reveals to the public the truth behind the common ignorance.
For Jessica, there is always "Tao", the way, in the order of the universe. For instance, the seasons change, the blooming and falling of flowers, represent not only the cycles of nature but great wisdom behind them. That was the reason why she chose "Water" as her theme to express her thoughts. "Water" is an amazing material, it freezes when it is cold, it vaporizes when it is hot, and is constantly changing and cycling like "Tao", the law, as explained in Iching.
"Water" is not only variable in physical forms, its changing between real and unreal characters is also the main point of her expressions. If we examine her works, the lines created by dragging of the paint palette are actually represented the image of the reflection in the water even though the colors are bright and heavy. The light and clear blocks of color were the actual matter. The contrast between real and unreal images intensified the rhythm of the painting and maximized the depth of the philosophical ideas. These subtle suggestions trap the viewer's thought and make them linger for a long time.
The essence of art is in surpassing reality. It is a process of discovery and separation. It separates the truth hiding behind the ordinary facet, discovers the sprit from the reality. What Jessica put into her paintings are her deep understanding of, constant living, and finally rising above life. In this exhibition, Jessica will show 30 pieces of her "Motionless Motion" Series paintings. These painting will help you to understand the interactive effects between the universe, the earth, and people. Between May 3rd and May 25th 2008 ,we sincerely invite you to come to Taipei Capitol Art Center to enjoy the exhibition.
