BACKGROUND/RESUME
BACKGROUND:

Richard Brown was born on New York’s fabled lower East Side, at Mulberry and Mott streets in "Little Italy." As he recalls, "It was difficult in those days, to say the least, trying to concentrate on art studies when our family was basically living from day to day in the depressed economy of the early fifties; especially in our
neighborhood."

Upon discharge from the Army, after serving in South Vietnam, he attended college at night, while holding down a full-time job during the day. "It was natural, I suppose, for me to gravitate into the advertising business where I had heard it was a dog-eat-dog environment. Turns out, I heard right. But real art, not art direction, was always in my plans," he explained.

Meanwhile, Richard concentrated his efforts on advertising where his design skills both in print and television advertising ultimately resulted in over 300 major awards for several agencies.

Looking back at his advertising career, he remarked, "For me, the problem with winning awards was I had to fight for my work, but while I usually won the small battles, I tended to lose on the business side. I guess I was strictly an artist, not a politician."

Richard started his own advertising and promotion agency in Manhattan, Richard Brown Associates, in 1990, continuing on his award-winning ways. The agency was successful enough to give him time to seriously focus on his own artwork. "I was back to my roots; drawing and painting," he noted.

It wasn’t enough. He wanted to create a new, distinctive graphic look. After much trial and error, he added his computer skills, first drawing the work, then scanning and re-drawing, adding vibrant colors and continually modifying via a computerized airbrush technique. "I’m really hard on myself and, I suppose, never really satisfied. I always try to make my next painting better than the last; reaching out to the viewer with work that really stands out in our current environment," he adds.
