Ageo Summer Festival
Ryan's Gallery
Oil on Canvas
When I went to the 2003 Summer festival in my old city - Ageo, it was raining, so in addition to all the concession booths, portable shrines, and colorful outfits, most people were carrying all different sorts of umbrellas. It was soooo pretty I had to try and paint a picture of it, but: hands, faces, and umbrellas aren't easy things to paint, and here there's a crowd of them. It took me nearly 2 years to finish this - not just with painting, but practicing some of those more difficult things, and taking long restful breaks between stints of working on it. Really I wanted it to be all about the umbrellas, but I chose a sort of a looking down perspective that downplayed their importance and it is more of just a summer festival. There are 3 girls dancing in the center with big hats - they call them umbrella hats. I wanted to use the to obscure their faces, but it seems that people assume they are their faces - which is not the case.
