I had intended to paint a picture of snow covered mountains while the weather was cold enough to permit snow - and still warm enough for me to stand outside, but the mountains were blocked by a haze on this day. I found this rustic shrine gate at the edge of a wood on a plateau at the base of a mountain. I liked the triple posts at the base and the red tiles at the top of the gate. I liked the texture of the grass in the foreground and the ascending tiers that go up with the path - deeper and deeper into the background. I've always been a big fan of trees/ living green, so I was not at all upset to find and paint this place instead.
The title of this piece is what I believe the name of the shrine is, but the kanji on the sign in the center of the gate do have a variety of pronunciations.
