I landed in the new world in the afternoon, after having travelled many air miles. The smells that pervaded the air, the piercing light and the swirling heat jostled my tired brain into alert mode: I averted my eyes from my large pale feet in their sandals. The hotel I was booked into rose from the beach, almost touching the damp sand. Two days later here I was, following the crowd that made its way along that beach to the fiesta, the bull rodeo. Weaving our way through hundreds of cars parked along the beach; we pushed with the rest of them to the sandy, walled-in ring. The sun was in the middle of the sky when we reached the sandy clearing of the arena.
