Sisters In StitchesAbout the artist:
Jean M. Judd of Cushing, Wisconsin, has been quilting since 1991. Jean is a self-taught hand quilter. She does not use thimbles as she feels her stitches are more consistent and smaller without. It is more difficult for her to feel the needle when using a thimble.

Jean uses an 18 inch hoop for a majority of her quilting. On occasion she also uses a 14 inch hoop or an oblong 16 inch hoop for doing the outer edges. The photo above is of Jean at the Syren Lilac Festival Art Show demonstrating hand quilting. The show was in an unheated ice arena. She is working on the Isn't It Coffee Time wall hanging.

All of her work is hand quilted and original designs using traditional quilt blocks. There is no painting on her quilts or fusing of fabrics to one another. All applique is done by hand. Most of her quilts made to date have been full size to king size quilts with moderate size quilts now just coming into her series work.

Jean now has her dream studio as of July 2007! Visit her website, www.jeanjudd.comOpens in new window to see the transition from her early studios to her current one. She relocated to the 1st floor of her house and has taken over the 2 largest rooms. She now has a 12 foot by 8 foot design wall, 14x12 foot office space and a huge studio space with Full Spectrum Lighting right off the office area. She can enjoy the beautiful view of the lake and can walk right out the sliding patio door. See the article about the evolution of her studio in The Professional Quilter Journal Fall of 2007 as well as in Art Calendar magazine in December of 2007.

There are over 100 quilts residing in homes across the US. Many of her quilts, pillows and wall hangings are in private collections, or been sold at auctions as well as fundraising raffles for national charitable organizations and retirement commissions.

Jean's Philosophy: "Not everything in life is about speed, quantity and immediate satisfaction. I could make hundreds of pieces a year by machine quilting instead of hand quilting. It is NOT about how many pieces I can produce quickly, it is about making a quality piece with old world craftsmanship and details that are uniquely mine. Each piece is designed by me. I select the fabric to be used and I piece it all together into a one-of-a-kind, unique artwork. Every quilt stitch is made by my 2 hands and a part of me resides in each piece. The design evolves as the process continues to completion."

Jean also offers custom hand quilting on clients antique and contemporary quilt tops. Contact her for further information through the Contact Artist option located on the sidebar.

Jean constructs commission pieces of any size for clients. She can be contacted via email for more details using the Contact Artist option located on the sidebar.

The question always arises about how many stitches per inch does she achieve in her quilts? Jean says she counts the stitches the traditional way that the Amish do -- only the stitches on the top of the quilt. She maintains 7 to 8 stitches per inch depending on the thickness of the batting. Most store bought quilts that are hand quilted have 3 to 4 stitches per inch maximum.

Many hand quilters today count the stitches on the front and the back of the quilt. If she did that, then her stitch count per inch would be 14 to 16 stitches per inch. It is good to check with the quilter as to whether they are counting stitches on just the top of the quilt or top and bottom when comparing stitches per inch.

Jean's website, www.jeanjudd.comOpens in new window is now up and running. There are still a couple of areas that have not been finished, but feel free to look through the site. This website will provide more detail about her construction process as well as direct information on how to commission your own art quilt. There will also be a gallery of current works in progress and a more centralized listing of current exhibitions so clients can see her work in person. As you know, photographs, no matter how professional, don't do justice to the details on textile art. They need to be seen in person to get the full effect of the minute details.
