Renée has been a graphic designer for over 20 years and is freelancing out of her home in Sanford, NC, but she has found jewelry design to be an altogether different and exciting way to be creative. While her graphic design work is a great career, it is the “hands on” process of working with the glass beads and recycled jewelry items that make it such a fun and creative change.
Renée creates handmade lampwork beads from Italian Moretti and stained glass. The beads are made by melting glass with a oxygen/propane torch onto a steel rod, then slowly cooling them in a kiln. This slow cooling process, called annealing, makes the beads strong enough to be used in jewelry for everyday wear. The colors, shapes and sizes of the beads are endless and it is all of the creative possibilities that is part of the fun in making something different everyday.
Renée uses the beads in earrings, bracelets, necklaces and other beaded projects. Most of her pieces are then combined with other metals, crystals, Sterling Silver, other glass beads and gemstones.
For her pins, Renée recycles lots of different items such as small stones, glass, glass beads, torn paper, buttons, cut up CD’s, credit cards, watch parts, seashells, old jewelry, paint and her own glass beads. Actually a bit of anything can become an element in the pin’s design. “All of the individual pieces had an original purpose, but when I put it in one of my pins it takes on a “whole” new life.” Each pin is different, signed, dated and is a small collage to wear.
Renée also makes greeting cards. Each card is made by hand and sealed in a protective clear envelope with an envelope for sending. The cards are also suitable for framing.
Renée received a BFA in Communications Arts from East Carolina University, Greenville, NC. At ECU she majored in Graphic Design and also studied painting, print making, photography and ceramics.
Renée is also adding a Graphic Design Gallery to this site. If you would like to view that Gallery, just go to Snell Graphic Design.
