Little Cat's 4 Season Fantasy (3)
Morning Light Art
THIS IMAGE: 2006 “Little Cat’s 4 Season Fantasy”. Right side of finished statue.
This is the second in the Little Cat series. It took around 165 hours to complete, acrylic paints over gesso base, on 3 ft tall fiberglass sculpture. I am tickled and grateful to report that it sold at Auction for $1000.
BACKGROUND: Each year our local kitty rescue shelter C.A.T.S. (Committed Alliance To Strays) has a fundraiser. Local artists paint 3 ft. tall fiberglass cat statues, which are sold at auction. All the money from the auction goes to benefit C.A.T.S.
MY INSPIRATION: My inspiration comes from Butterfly, my rescued calico kitty. She had a rough start, and almost didn’t make it. But now she is thriving, energetic and mischievious! Our older cat, Dusty, was also a rescued kitty, from C.A.T.S.
THIS YEAR’S DESIGN: When I started sketching the design for this year's statue, Butterfly had just turned one year old. She had just experienced, for the very first time, all four seasons. What a hoot! She is an indoor kitty, but can go outside into an enclosed, protected pen to experience grass, dirt, weather, rain, snow, sounds and smells...and of course, track in mud and drag in her favorite toys: leaves! So, this year's statue is titled: Little Cat's 4 Season Fantasy, and again featured the Big Cats of Butterfly's dreams, the lion, white tiger, and jaguar.
MY APPROACH: I used the fiberglass cat form as a 3-D canvas. The painting literally wrapped around the cat, unfolding a scene from Little Cat’s inner world.
My chosen style was “Impressionistic Folk Art”. Folk Art is a wonderful, whimsical method for visual storytelling. Here is a short summary of what I enjoy about this style:
“It is unihibited and free-spirited, an ‘emotional expressionism’, not restricted by demands of reality or optical realism. More interested in color and design, pattern and texture; with a joyous and passionate use of color.” (Yes, there is a lot of exhuberant color on Little Cat, Big Dreams!)
Since I also love Impressionism, I have incorporated a softer-edged style to my Folk Art, and dubbed it Impressionistic Folk Art. I usually paint using Genesis Heat-Set Oils, which make it easy to create this style. It is a little more challenging in acrylics, but I am still quite happy with the outcome. I LOVED doing this project, and look forward to many more.
