Little Cat, Big Dreams (8)
Morning Light Art
THIS IMAGE: 2005 “Little Cat, Big Dreams”. Butterfly detail.
This was the first in the Little Cat series, and I was excited to find it sold at auction for $1100. It took around 125 hours to complete, acrylic paints over gesso base, on 3 ft tall fiberglass sculpture.
BACKGROUND: Each year our local kitty rescue shelter C.A.T.S. (Committed Alliance To Strays) has a fundraiser. Local artists paint 3 ft. tall fiberglass cat statues, which are sold at auction. All the money from the auction goes to benefit C.A.T.S.
MY INSPIRATION: My inspiration comes from Butterfly, my rescued calico kitty. She had a rough start, and almost didn’t make it. But now she is thriving, energetic and mischievious! Our older cat, Dusty, was also a rescued kitty, from C.A.T.S.
THIS YEAR’S DESIGN: Watching Butterfly strut around like she owns her new world is a delight. She thinks she is Queen….the Mighty Huntress. She commands her universe (unless she is running for cover because she pounced upon Dusty while sleeping, and is about to get her ears boxed!).
Hence...Little Cat, Big Dreams... in honor of Butterfly’s struggle to be born, to survive, to claim her rightful place in this world.
MY APPROACH: I used the fiberglass cat form as a 3-D canvas. The painting literally wrapped around the cat, unfolding a scene from Little Cat’s inner world.
My chosen style was “Impressionistic Folk Art”. Folk Art is a wonderful, whimsical method for visual storytelling. Here is a short summary of what I enjoy about this style:
“It is unihibited and free-spirited, an ‘emotional expressionism’, not restricted by demands of reality or optical realism. More interested in color and design, pattern and texture; with a joyous and passionate use of color.” (Yes, there is a lot of exhuberant color on Little Cat, Big Dreams!)
Since I also love Impressionism, I have incorporated a softer-edged style to my Folk Art, and dubbed it Impressionistic Folk Art. I usually paint using Genesis Heat-Set Oils, which make it easy to use this style. It is a little more challenging in acrylics, but I am still quite happy with the outcome. I LOVED doing this project, and look forward to many more.
