Self-Portrait As Prometheus

Self-Portrait As Prometheus
Stone Riley

Acrylic & graphite on canvas, 60 x 48 inches.

This painting is intended as a sort of journal entry, an attempt to depict a state of mind (and therefore existence) with no attempt whatever to be beautiful nor even decorative (not even in the fine sense of Matisse) nor much less inspiring, awesome, majestic or overpowering through any of your senses at all. It is a personal diary entry. I'm hoping to be accurate.

It's about my experience creating Tarot decks and using them in pastoral counseling. Complex lively useful structure, as fire meant industry to the Greeks. Thus too Odin climbing up to hang upon the Worldtree and creating the alphabet of Runes. And, more widely, it's about performing the role of a deity here within the borders of a manifested world.

The modern Pagan movement has gone through stages. It was at first quite masculine, for example, and currently is quite feminine. I remember when our practices of communing with spirits became widespread, in the early 1990s. Drums became a universal fixture at a certain point in time. Right now it seems we're beginning to emphasize and grow the arts of conscious mythic role playing.

Of course we all play mythic roles at every moment, for we are human, but to do it consciously is very good. Life is far less confusing when you see it all as myth, and far more open to your participation.
