Lamentation of Christ
The Ran Collection
On Friday evening Joseph of the city Arimofei, a devout man and a secret disciple of Jesus, came to Pilate with a request to give him the body of Christ. Joseph lifted the body of the Savior from the cross, bought the Shroud (large sheet) and put it around the body. In the burial was attended by yet another secret disciple of Christ - Nicodemus and women that accompanied the Savior on the penalty.
The next day the chief priests and Pharisees came to the governor that he allowed police to set the coffin «until the third day» (Christ said: «After three days rise again»), otherwise the disciples would steal the body and tell people that Jesus «risen from the grave».
On the third day after the crucifixion of Jesus suddenly started a strong earthquake, bright light lightened the cave, rolled into the rocks, and Jesus Christ was resurrected from the dead. Guards fled in terror.
Early the next morning after the feast of Passover, women went to the tomb of Christ and was surprised to see that the stone was postponed from the cave entrance. And on the rock was a young man, vested in white clothes, who said that the Savior was resurrected. Then the angel (which he was) told to convey Christ's disciples that he will wait for them in Galilee.
The icon painting Lamentation of Christ is replicated from the original, 15 century. The initial author is unknown.
The work is sanctified in the Church of Holy Sepulchre, also known as the Church of Resurrection, in Jerusalem, Israel. Church of the Holy Sepulchre is one of the holiest places in the world for Christians, who come here for 2000 years to visit the place where Jesus of Nazareth died, was buried, and rose back.
