Pieta
The Ran Collection

This particular Pieta is a replica from the copy of the original Byzantine icon which is located in Beit Jamal Monastery in Israel. The original Pieta is kept out of public access within the existing monastery. Katrin also has such an icon in her own collection; her Pieta is as well the replica from the original icon, and is presented by the monk of the monastery. The time of creation and the initial author of the icon is unknown.
From www. en. wikipedia.orgOpens in new window: "The Pietà (from Italian for pity) is a subject in Christian art depicting the Virgin Mary cradling the dead body of Jesus, most often found in sculpture. As such, it is a particular form of the Lamentation of Christ, a scene from the Passion of Christ found in cycles of the Life of Christ. When Christ and the Virgin are surrounded by other figures from the New Testament, the subject is strictly called a Lamentation in English, although Pietà is often used for this as well, and is the normal term in Italian. The Pietà developed in Germany about 1300, reached Italy about 1400, and was especially popular in Central Europe. Many German and Polish 15th century examples in wood greatly emphasise Christ's wounds. The Deposition of Christ and the Lamentation or Pietà form the 13th of the Stations of the Cross, as well as one of Seven Sorrows of the Virgin." Thus, Pieta painted by Katrin Schwarz is a very rare image which might exist in only several copies across the world.
Pieta, painted by Katrin Schwarz in 2003 is sanctified in Jerusalem, Israel in the Church of Holy Sepulchre (the Church of Resurrection). Church of the Holy Sepulchre is one of the holiest places in the world for Christians, who come here for 2000 years to visit the place where Jesus of Nazareth died, was buried, and rose back. The certificate of the church and the certificate "Byzantine Art" can be found at the back of the wooden board.
