Madonna of Clemency
The Ran Collection
In the middle of 15 century the art of Central Italy has experienced a rapid flowering, a shining example of which is the paintings of Piero della Francesca (about 1420-1492), one of the most important artists of Renaissance. Piero della Francesca came out of the picturesque style of local schools and identified the development of Italian art in general.
"Madonna of Clemency", or "Madonna of Mercy" was created in 1444-1464 for the artist's hometown of Umbria, Italy. This is the main panel of the Polyptych, belongs to Pinacoteca Comunale, Sansepolcro, Italy.
The artist found the unusual way to depict the image of Mary, the Mother of God. With his new approach, the figure of a young Mary far exceeded the size of the figure worshipers, who are fallen down on their knees in front of Mother of God. Madonna arises over them ,and everyone can find the protection and refuge under the arms of St. Mary. Her face as always shows kindness and love, and a great deal of calmness.
Katrin' Schwarz replicated this painting in 2003. The work is sanctified in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, Jerusalem, Israel. Church of the Holy Sepulchre is one of the holiest places in the world for Christians, who come here for 2000 years to visit the place where Jesus of Nazareth died, was buried, and rose back. The certificate of the church can be found at the back of the wooden board.
