Clarisse Master Madonna and Child
The Ran Collection
The 13-century painting by Clarisse Master is inspired by Byzantine icons. It illustrates the main events of Jesus' existence, depicting His first and His last days of earthy life.By presenting these images together within the one painting, the artist is showing the full cycle of Jesus' redemption of humankind. In the center of the painting are the images of the Virgin and the Child, on the left is the Angel Gabriel, and on the right is the image of Mary in the Virgin of Annunciation, the moment of learning about immaculate conception. Above the Virgin and Child is the image of crucified Christ, and above the Crucifiction are two angels who blow trumpets, announcing the Last Judgement.
Katrin Schwarz made a replica from this icon painting in 2003. The work is sanctified by the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, Israel. Church of the Holy Sepulchre is one of the holiest places in the world for Christians, who come here for 2000 years to visit the place where Jesus of Nazareth died, was buried, and rose back. The certificate "Byzantine Art" can be found on the back of the wooden panel.
