Agony in the Garden
The Ran Collection
After Last Supper Jesus prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane and He said to His disciples, "Sit here, while I pray." He took with Him Peter and James and John, and He said to them, "My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch." And going a little further he failed on the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him. And He said, "Abba, Father, all things are possible to thee; If you are willing, take this cup away from me; nevertheless, let you will be done, not mine." (Luke 22:67). Jesus prayed to be spared from His suffering. His disciples fell asleep, but an angel appeared "to give him strength." (Luke 22:43). This miniature artwork made by Katrin Schwarz is an exact replica from the famous painting of Italian master Andrea Mantegna, 15th century.
The painting is sanctified in Jerusalem, Israel, in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre (also known as the Church of resurrection), one of the holiest places in the world for Christians, who come here for 2000 years to visit the place where Jesus of Nazareth died, was buried, and rose back.
