Nativity of Christ
The Ran Collection
Nevyansk icons, a beautiful religious art, is believed to be an outstanding phenomenon of Russia. This unique school of iconography is named after the town of Nevyansk, the mining, metallurgical, and cultural center of Ural Mountings area, the region next to Siberia. In the 18th century, Nevyansk was settled primarily by Old Believers, the traditional Christians, who commissioned from local artisans some glimmering, stylish icons which may be regarded as the last phase in the history of Russian icon-painting before the beginning of Communist era.
"Nevyansk icon" is a particular phenomenon. Far away from capital cities and big culture centers, the iconography school of Nenyask bloomed, preserving and following Old Russian icon painting tradition during two hundred years. "Nevyansk icon" is distinguished by thoroughness, "passion", high spirituality of painting and local colour, reflecting real geographic and economic conditions of the Urals. Gradually keeping up with the traditions of Old Russia, at the same time it was a gradually developing creative process reflective to all changes evoked by the modern age. The features of Baroque and Classicism, romantic and realistic tendencies showed themselves in Nevyansk icons; nevertheless, it didn't turn the art of icon-painting into the secular picture.
The Nativity of Christ by Katrin Schwarz is a replica of old Nevyansk icon. The story of Christ's birth starts from the Caesar Augustus' decree that all the human population is supposed to be counted, every one of his or her own city. Joseph, the future father of Christ, also went up from Galilee, out of Nazareth into Judea, to the city of David, Bethlehem, to be counted with Mary, who expected her child very soon. Mary was in labor while on the road, and the family was looking for place to stay, but because there was no room for them in the inn, Mary delivered her firstborn child in a manger. There were shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. The angel came upon them and said, "Fear not; for behold, I bring you good things of great joy, which shall be to all men. A Saviour is born this day in the city of David. And this shall be a sigh to you. You shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger." Shepherds went and asked, "Where is he that is born King? For we have seen the star in the East, in Bethlehem." And the star went before them all, and stood over where the child was. And they came with haste, and found Mary and Joseph and a child, lying in a manger. Nativity is among most favorite holy events of Christianity. Scores of artist through out the world and of different times were and are with a great joy paint the nativity scenes.
