ABOUT the ARTIST
The paintings of Katrin Schwarz are created in the Holy Land and sanctified in Jerusalem, at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, (also called the Church of Resurrection), the site which is venerated by most Christians as Golgotha. Some of the Christian paintings and Orthodox icons are sanctified in Gornenskaya nunnery on the mount Carmel ( Ein Karem), the church and the place of the important pilgrimage destination of Orthodox Christians.
Katrin emigrated to Israel in the early 1990s from the former Soviet Union, where she had owned a gallery of contemporary Russian art. In Israel she started to study religion and iconography. Schwarz created her first icon reproduction in 2003. Old Italian, Russian, and German masters of religious art have become her permanent inspiration. Each one of Schwarz's paintings are hand-painted and is considered an original in the traditions of iconography.
Katrin works long hours, sometimes beginning her day at 4:30 by morning. The wooden boards are specifically prepared according to traditional iconography technique. Pigments are chosen skillfully, where the purpose of the artist is to resemble the hues and spirit of original works. The hand-painted replicas made in strict accordance with canon of Christian church (from Greek "kanon" for rule, standard, or measure as well as spiritual rules for iconographers).
Every piece of her work is sanctified by very important Christian churches of Jerusalem, and there is a certificate of the church back on wooden boards, as well as the name of the artist, and place and date of creation. Not only the artworks, but also wooden boards, pigments, brushes, and also the artist's house are blessed by the church.
