St. Martinian
The Ran Collection
Saint Martinian went to live in the desert of Palestine at the age of eighteen. For twenty-five years, he devoted himself to ascetic deeds, and he had miraculous abilities of healing and casting out demons. However, through his life he was suffering from various temptations.
Once a profligate woman named Zoe was trying to seduce St Martinian; she came to him pretending that she had lost her way in the storm, and asking for shelter. The saint let her enter. The guest changed into beautiful clothes and began to tempt the ascetic. St Martinian came out to send the woman away. Though he was tempted by the woman's beauty, he was determined not to fall into sin. Instead of seduction, the woman turned to be shown how evil she was, and she was deeply sorry about it. She repented and asked the saint to guide her onto the way of salvation. He told her to go to Bethlehem, where she lived as a nun for twelve years in strict asceticism until her blessed end. This is only one from the numerous stories about St. Martinian. He is a patron of family and marriage, both for Catholics and Orthodox.
The original author of Katrin Schwarz's replica is the famous Dionisius, one of the main Russian iconographer of 15th century. The face of St. Martinian, along with other beautiful paintings of the master, is located in the Monastery of the Virgin Mary, Ferapontovo (Central Russia).
The painting has a certificate of traditional Byzantine icon reproduction, with the remark: Nazareth - Jerusalem - Beth Lehem - Holy Land 2004. High technique and excellent quality of this small miniature of 2003 make the image of St. Martinian the beautiful example of Katrin Schwarz's art.
