St. George and the Dragon
The Ran Collection

St George is among the most famous of Christian figures. This painting shows two episodes from the story of Saint George: his defeat of a plague-bearing dragon that had been terrorising the city; and the rescued princess bringing the dragon to heel. The story is from a popular collection of Saints's lives, called "The Golden Legend". After its publication in 1265, the fame of St George throughout Europe was greatly increased
Great martyr George was the son of wealthy and pious parents who raised him in the Christian faith. He was born in the city of Beirut at the foot of the Lebanese mountains. Enrolled to army, George stood out among the soldiers to their intellect, courage, and physical strength. After reaching the high officer rank, George became a favorite of Emperor Diocletian, a talented ruler, but fanatical supporter of the Roman gods. He went down in history as one of the most violent persecutor of Christians. Having heard on the court verdict on the brutal extermination of Christians, St. George ignite compassion for them. In anticipation of also expecting the suffering, he distributed his assets to poor, let the will of his slaves, came and declared himself as a Christian. St. George was imprisoned, where he suffered a lot, but glorified Lord. In the end, the emperor ordered a sword cut off the head of the Saint. The holy martyr went to Christ in 303 year.
The courage and spiritual victory over his enemies who were unable to force him to renounce Christianity, as well as the miraculous aid to people in danger, made George the Great the Saint the Warrior. The relics of St. George put in the Palestinian city of Lida, in the temple that has his name, and his head is kept in Rome in the temple, also dedicated to St. George.
St. George is a patron of tens of countries, including England, Russia, Canada, Italy, and Peru, as well as agricultural workers, Boy Scouts, cavalry, farmers, riders, saddle makers, and soldiers.

The painting is replicated by Katrin Schwarz in 2005. It is sanctified in Jerusalem, Israel, in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre (the Church of Resurrection). Church of the Holy Sepulchre is one of the holiest places in the world for Christians, who come here for 2000 years to visit the place where Jesus of Nazareth died, was buried, and rose back. The certificate of the church can be found at the back of the wooden board.
