Flute Player
Vics Magsaysay
Robert "Bob" Shroder is a multi-awarded Filipino American who professionally plays flute, directs and conducts FASO or Filipino American Symphony Orchestra, the first full-chamber Filipino American orchestra ever assembled in the United States. I photographed him in his home using only available light coming from the living room window. The sun was low and quite weak. I balanced the highest ISO available and the slowest speed that would be enough to stop his movement while playing the flute--glad that it came out perfect. Yes, if the ISO was set too high--in order to have a higher shutter speed to stop the motion and make it sharper--digital noise would be a problem. (Yes, you can somehow eliminate them in post processing. I rather not have this problem outright.) Having a good rapport with your subject is important, too, in portraiture. With Bob, it was no problem--he's simply a nice and warm person. Also, in my opinion, less is more when it comes to lighting--simplicity always reigns supreme...simply in everything that we do.
