"Living in a small cabin in the Santa Cruz Mountains, there was a steep hill just outside my front door. In the late afternoon, dark shadows began creeping from the peak of the hill down towards my cabin. One day I was walking along the base of the hill to discover a giant, powerful California Poppy spotlighted still in sunshine with a backdrop of intense blues. I’d also wanted to portray the playful, lighter side of this dramatic beauty so I sketched out the choreography below the strong flower image."-Elaine Frenett
Elaine’s “stylized representational” watercolor work is expressed/characterized with dynamically juicy, abstract darks accompanied by delicate attention to detail. Predominantly transparent pigments mingle with occasional wax crayon, gouache or found objects depicting nature’s story or a hidden story. With value exaggeration and color invention Frenett crafts her own expression and emotional response.
