Nagas often appeared in the ancient China and Hindu art. They could be some kind of giant snake beings, or dragons. In Mahayana Buddhism, nagas were water deities who guard the sutras in their palaces.
There was a renowned Buddhism philosopher Nagarjuna: he was an Indian philosopher who lived in the 2nd century. He established the Madhyamika school. Historians know very little about his life; it was said that Nagarjuna was befriended by the nagas.
