The creative process in doing commission pieces for the Family Name genre of artwork is more of a thoughtful, personal time. I enjoy the initial interviews with the client and getting to know them personally. This interview is where I find the inspiration for the piece. It is based on the individual family members, their careers, hobbies, travels, and other bits of information.
The one aspect that flows from commission to commission, is the center medallion area where the letter from the client’s last name is used as the focal point. Fabrics are selected from my vast inventory of commercial textiles and the design flows outward from that point.
Detail image of the center medallion can be seen here showing the dense, intricate stitching. A full view of the back of the artwork really shows off the hand stitching.
